Miami Reggae Artist Shifta Escapes Prison After Judge Overturns Conviction in Murder-for-Hire Case

Miami reggae artist Tamrat “Shifta” Mason received a huge legal victory in federal court when U.S. District Judge Roy Altman overturned his jury conviction for witness tampering in a Miami-Dade murder-for-hire case and accepted his plea to a lesser charge of making a false statement to a federal agent.

Mason, 41, was sentenced to time served — just the few days he spent in federal lock-up after his arrest last year — sparking applause from family and friends in the courtroom.

Originally facing up to three years in prison, Mason avoided further punishment thanks to a plea deal negotiated by his defense attorney and prosecutors.

His reduced role as the “third wheel” in the case stands in stark contrast to the two ringleaders, Rolando “Roly” Ramirez and Rasheed “Free” Ali, who were convicted of masterminding the violent plot against celebrity car designer Alex Vega and now face possible life sentences.

Vega, who survived being shot three times outside his Miami home in 2019, testified about years of bitter business rivalry with Ramirez, whose threats and feud escalated into a deadly conspiracy.

While other co-defendants have already received decades-long prison terms, Mason’s outcome highlights the sharp divide in sentencing for those involved in one of Miami’s most high-profile criminal cases.
